When it comes to easy day trips from Gibraltar, Tarifa is always high on my list — beautiful views, a lively surf scene, and some great food spots tucked away if you know where to look.
Recently, my friends and I stopped in Tarifa for brunch on our way to Cadiz for a girls’ weekend. We chose a cafe called Surla, just outside the main town area, and I was very excited to finally try their gluten-free pancakes.
With a beachy, bohemian vibe, Surla captures the laid-back spirit of Tarifa’s surf scene — which makes sense given its proximity to the town’s famous beaches.
The menu is clearly marked with allergens, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the ingredients they use, which definitely helped put me at ease when ordering.
The pancakes are gluten free and lactose free — even better for me. Gluten is an absolute no-no, and while lactose doesn’t make me feel as unwell, I still try to avoid it when I can.
I chose to have the pancakes topped with fresh fruit and local, organic honey. They were deliciously light and fluffy and came beautifully presented.

This was an excellent brunch option, although there weren’t many other choices for a gluten-free diner.
If you’re looking for a relaxed brunch spot in Tarifa that’s mindful of gluten-free needs, Surla is a great choice. Although the gluten-free options are limited, the quality, care, and friendly atmosphere make it well worth a stop. I’m already looking forward to my next visit — those pancakes alone are reason enough to come back.
